Three "elements" people mix up
Chinese astrology uses element language in three different places, and they are not interchangeable:
Your Year Pillar element — your zodiac sign's element
Set by your birth year at Li Chun. This is what this page is about, and it never changes. A Fire Horse stays a Fire Horse for life.
Your Day Master — your Ba Zi core element
The element of your birth day's Heavenly Stem — the element that represents you personally in a full Four Pillars chart. Two people with the same year element can have completely different Day Masters. Build yours with the free Ba Zi calculator →
The annual element — the year's environment
Each zodiac year carries its own element-animal energy — 丁未 Fire Goat for 2027. The year's element is the weather your fixed chart moves through; it doesn't change your birth element or sign.
The two cycles that connect the elements
Generating cycle (相生): Wood generates Fire, Fire generates Earth, Earth generates Metal, Metal generates Water, Water generates Wood.
Controlling cycle (相克): Wood controls Earth, Fire controls Metal, Earth controls Water, Metal controls Wood, Water controls Fire.
These two cycles are the grammar of every reading on this site: whether an element supports, drains, or challenges another is always read through 相生 and 相克.
The five elements, one by one
Wood
stems 甲 (Yang) · 乙 (Yin)Wood is the element of growth and beginnings — the energy of spring, of plans taking root and steadily reaching upward. Wood-year people are often described as principled, generous, and quietly persistent.
Recent Wood years include the 1984 Wood Rat, the 1985 Wood Ox, the 1974 Wood Tiger.
Fire
stems 丙 (Yang) · 丁 (Yin)Fire is the element of expression and visibility — the energy of summer, of warmth that draws people in. Fire-year people are often described as expressive, decisive, and quick to inspire others.
Recent Fire years include the 1996 Fire Rat, the 1997 Fire Ox, the 1986 Fire Tiger.
Earth
stems 戊 (Yang) · 己 (Yin)Earth is the element of stability and care — the energy of harvest and transition seasons, of things made dependable. Earth-year people are often described as steady, practical, and trustworthy.
Recent Earth years include the 2008 Earth Rat, the 2009 Earth Ox, the 1998 Earth Tiger.
Metal
stems 庚 (Yang) · 辛 (Yin)Metal is the element of structure and refinement — the energy of autumn, of clarity and follow-through. Metal-year people are often described as disciplined, precise, and strong-willed.
Recent Metal years include the 2020 Metal Rat, the 2021 Metal Ox, the 2010 Metal Tiger.
Water
stems 壬 (Yang) · 癸 (Yin)Water is the element of wisdom and adaptability — the energy of winter, of depth and reflection. Water-year people are often described as perceptive, diplomatic, and resourceful.
Recent Water years include the 1972 Water Rat, the 1973 Water Ox, the 2022 Water Tiger.
How element and animal make the 60-year cycle
Each element spans two consecutive years — a Yang year, then a Yin year — while the twelve animals advance one per year. Five elements × twelve animals gives the 60-year sexagenary cycle: every specific pairing returns once in a lifetime. That is why a "Horse year" question is incomplete — a Fire Horse (like 2026) and a Water Horse (like 2002) read very differently.

Born in late January or early February? Read this first
The zodiac year changes at Li Chun (the "Start of Spring" solar term, around February 3–5) — not at Chinese New Year and not on January 1. If you were born near that boundary, your element and animal may belong to the previous year, and an exact birth time can be needed to resolve it. Our calculator handles the boundary precisely.

How 2027 — the 丁未 Fire Goat year — reads for each element
From Chinese New Year on February 6, 2027 (the Ba Zi year turns at Li Chun, February 3–4), the year carries Fire-over-Earth Fire Goat energy. Remember: this is the year's environment — it doesn't change your birth element. Here is the year's flavour for each Year Pillar element, at a glance:
Wood years — "Ideas Into Income" (食伤 Shí Shāng)
Creative expression lands and earns recognition
Watch for: wood feeds the year's fire — vitality depletes fast
Fire years — "Banked Hearth" (比劫 Bǐ Jié)
Steady confidence and visibility without 2026's burnout
Watch for: rivalry and peers can siphon resources (比劫 robs wealth)
Earth years — "Abundant, Grounded Harvest" (印星 Yìn Xīng)
Support, mentors, and resources arrive readily (Fire produces Earth)
Watch for: too much earth can breed stagnation and stubbornness
Metal years — "Forge With Allies" (官杀 Guān Shā)
Mentors and support are available (Earth feeds Metal)
Watch for: the year's fire directly tests and pressures you
Water years — "Wealth in the Heat" (财星 Cái Xīng)
Wealth and opportunity blaze around you (Fire is your wealth)
Watch for: the year has little water — you are unsupported and surrounded

Frequently asked questions
What do the five Chinese zodiac elements mean?
Wood stands for growth and beginnings, Fire for expression and visibility, Earth for stability and care, Metal for structure and refinement, and Water for wisdom and adaptability. Every birth year carries one element alongside its animal, giving each animal sign five distinct variations across the 60-year cycle.
How do Chinese zodiac elements work?
Each year's element comes from that year's Heavenly Stem, and each element spans two consecutive years — a Yang year then a Yin year. Combined with the 12 animals, this produces the 60-year sexagenary cycle: the same element-animal pairing (say, Fire Horse) returns once every 60 years.
Does the current year change my zodiac element?
No. Your element and animal are set by your birth year at the Li Chun boundary and never change. An annual year like the 2027 Fire Goat is the environment your fixed chart moves through — it colors the year, not your identity.
Is my zodiac element the same as my Day Master?
No — they are different parts of a Ba Zi chart. Your zodiac element (the Year Pillar) comes from your birth year. Your Day Master comes from your birth day's Heavenly Stem and is the element that represents you personally in a full Four Pillars reading. Two people with the same year element can have completely different Day Masters.
