What an honest reading withholds
The birth time sets the Hour Pillar — one of the twelve two-hour periods (時辰). Without it, we leave that pillar out entirely, and with it go three conclusions that depend on the full chart:
- Day Master strength — whether your core element is well-supported or drained needs all four pillars weighed.
- Favorable elements (用神) — the elements to lean into follow from strength, so they need your birth time to be reliable.
- 10-Year Luck Pillars (Da Yun) — the decade cycle itself advances from your Month Pillar (gender sets its direction), but its favorable/challenging classification follows from your favorable elements — which need the full chart.
That is a limitation stated plainly — not a broken reading. Personality, pillar interactions, and the year-by-year environment still read from the three exact pillars.
Why guessing noon is worse than saying "unknown"
Many calculators quietly substitute 12:00 noon when no time is given. That doesn't produce a weaker reading — it produces a wrong one that looks complete: a fabricated Hour Pillar feeds a fabricated strength assessment, fabricated favorable elements, and a fabricated luck-cycle timeline, none of them flagged.
An omitted Hour Pillar is the opposite: honest, visible, and correctable. The day you find your real birth time, the withheld sections simply unlock — nothing computed before it has to be un-learned. That is how this site's calculator and paid reading both behave.
How to find your birth time
- Birth certificate. Many countries record the time of birth. In the US it is usually on the long-form certificate (the hospital/vault copy) — the short form often omits it; request the long form from your state's vital-records office.
- Hospital records. Hospitals keep delivery records for years — sometimes decades; a medical-records request can recover the time.
- Baby book, announcement card, or family letters. Times were often written down at the moment.
- Parents and relatives. Even a part of day ("just before dinner", "middle of the night") narrows the twelve two-hour periods considerably.
If you recover an approximate time: clock time isn't solar time — without a birth place, the hour is accurate to about ±1 時辰, so add your birth city when you enter it.
One edge case: for the roughly 4% of people born in the late-evening 子 window (23:00–midnight), the day pillar itself can shift with the exact time — one more reason we ask rather than assume.
